Overview of the situation in the Philippines according to the WHO
As of July 20, 2020, 69,697 people were confirmed in the Philippines, 1 831 died and 22,465 people were recovered from coronavirus. The epicentres are in the Metro Manila region and in the central Visayas area. Hospitals report 100% occupancy of beds reserved for coronavirus patients.
In the Philippines is a general community quarantine, only in the city of Cebu there is an enhanced community quarantine. There is clear evidence of an increasing trend in the number of cases in the cities with previously zero cases reporting their first case, all with travel history from areas with transmission. The number of cases increased immediately when the government relaxed restrictions and now is intervening locally in regions with high rate of confirmed cases.
Evacuation centres, where 46,736 people are housed, are also at risk, because there is a high concentration of people in one place, minimal hygiene, malnutrition and limited access to health care. 5,300 migrants are also expected to move from Malaysia to Zamboanga, southwest on the island of Mindanao, where are more than 1,000 cases. There are currently 10,679 health workers and 8,805 community workers trained in the Philippines for infection prevention and control. There are 55 laboratories certified to conduct COVID-19 in the Philippines and another 174 public and private laboratories under assessment.
In the Philippines is helped by non-governmental organizations like UNICEF, which has provided disinfectants and equipment for health professionals. Community workers were also trained face-to-face or through webinars, thanks to UNICEF and the World Health Organization.
